Thora arrives on Hecla Island in 1931 as a 12 year old who emigrates from Iceland.
She meets the challenges of treacherously weak ice when it surrounds the Island in the spring, learning a new language and adjusting to life in a foreign land. Thora's first year in Canada proves to be both frustrating and fufilling.
Sylvia (Brynjolfson) Sigurdson was raised on Hecla Island, Manitoba and continues to have a strong interest in the heritage of the Island. She and her husband Stefan raised their three children in Riverton, Manitoba. They are now retired and living in White Rock, B.C. Sylvia is a first time author.
